The birthstone for January is Garnet. Although garnet is generally a deep red the colours can range from bright pink (rhodolite garnet), to brilliant red, orange and purple (Brazillian garnet). The name garnet comes from the Greek word ‘granatum’ which means pomegranate seed after the shape and colour of the crystals.
Giving a piece of birthstone jewellery is supposed to bring good luck to the wearer. Garnet is associated with purity, truth, faithfulness and friendship. As well as being January's birthstone, garnet is considered to be the birthstone for Capricorn – the zodiac sign for those born between December 22 and January 21. |
